• Instructor: Cathryn Amidei June 13-17, 9am - 5pm (with 24 hr access to the DWL and TC2 loom) This workshop is designed as an introduction to weaving with the TC2 and allow participants the hands on experience of weaving on this exciting tool. This workshop is suitable for all levels and will be flexible to conform to the experience and interests of the participants. The workshop will start with an introduction to using Photoshop to design files for digital weaving and progress from single, to multi-shuttle structures. Small class sizes allow for individualized teaching and support. The class size will be limited to 5 participants. Content will also include discussions about warp densities, loom set up, winding, warping, end feed shuttles, and winding bobbins. Teacher Bio: Cathryn has been studying and weaving and teaching in Jacquard technique for 15+ years. She held a faculty position at Eastern Michigan University until 2018. She is currently the director of the Digital Weaving Lab at Praxis Fiber Workshop and provides technical support to artists and Universities in North America  when they purchase a loom.
  • Instructor: Denise Williams Thursdays, April 21, 28, & May 5, 12.  6:00-9:00pm   Begin your spinning journey using a drop spindle. This portable tool will allow you to understand the basics of spinning yarn from wool. This course will begin with fiber preparation as this is the number one way to ensure you have a successful start at spinning. In week 3, participants will move to the spinning wheel. Starting with learning to treadle, you will become comfortable with the rhythm and pace of the spinning wheel. Participants are welcome to bring their own wheel, or try a variety of wheels at Praxis from one treadle to two treadle to compact travel wheels. The course will conclude with immersion dyeing yarn and plying. The end result will be unique skeins ready for any fiber project. Participants in any 5 week course receive access to Praxis during our open studio hours Wednesday and Sunday from 12-4pm.
  • Instructor: Sarah McMahon Thursdays, February 3, 10, 17, 24 & march 3.  6:00-9:00pm Interested in learning how to create your own cloth? Or do you already have a loom at home but have no idea where to start? You will learn how to weave on floor looms from yarn to cloth. By weaving a sampler scarf using simple woven structures, you will become comfortable with all of the steps in the weaving process. For the first half of the class, familiarize yourself with the loom, learn how to calculate materials needed and to set up the warp (dress your loom). The second half of the class is weaving and finishing your project! This class is designed with the beginner in mind and requires no prior experience. Students receive access to open studios at Praxis every Wednesday and Sunday from 12 - 4pm for the duration of the course. Some outside weaving is required to complete the project in 5 weeks. The Patricia Wolfe Scholarship supports the advancement of early education in weaving by allowing one participant to be awarded full participation in our Introduction to Weaving Class.   • Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger Wednesdays, October, 20, 27, & November 3, 17 6:00-9:00pm There are so many different ways to apply dye to fabric! In this four-week course you will explore the many ways of using MX Reactive dye processes on cotton and silk. In the first two weeks you will learn freestyle direct painting with dye as well as low water immersion dyeing, mono printing and screen-printing techniques. In weeks 3 and 4 create complex layers with Shibori as well as color removal processes. Custom designed fabric yardage can then be used for a wide variety of projects or wearables. The possibilities are endless!
