  • We offer open studio time Wednesdays and Sundays from noon to 4:00pm. $30 drop in.

    Open studios is a great way to try out the workshop at Praxis! Do you have a project you’re working on but need space or equipment? Come use ours! Maybe you’ve taken a class but need a little extra time to work.  A drop in fee of $30 includes access to our dye lab, print tables and equipment.  All dyes and chemicals are included, just bring your materials. or buy some of ours! Drop in hours are for artists who have taken a related class in the past or have experience with the equipment. If you are interest in learning how to use our facilities please consider taking a workshop or individual instruction in order to utilize open studio.   • Instructor: Jo Ettorre Tuesdays February 13, 20, & 27, March 6 6 - 9pm Find out what your most beloved yarns might do by blending them on the knitting machine.  Knit them quickly into blanks to be dyed or many other uses for knit fabrics.
  • Instructor: Kathryn Simmons Wednesdays: February 26, March 4, 11, & 18 Spinning yarn is one of the oldest fiber traditions whose basic techniques have not changed much since the Leonardo Davinci invented the modern spinning wheel around 1490. A meditative and relaxing process, spinning is great way for weavers, knitters and artists alike to create custom yarn. Participants will learn to spin and ply yarns in this exciting four week course.
  • Instructor: Rebecca Cross Tuesdays: October 16, 23 & 30, November 6 Learn how to forge for natural dye materials in local metro parks and community gardens. Bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Incorporate rust prints, eco printing and indigo dyeing for layered and complex results. You will also contribute to the creation of our very own natural dye garden at Praxis Fiber Workshop.
  • Instructor: Rebecca Cross June 16 & 17th, 9:30 - 4pm Big Ass PAPER DYEING is a first time partnership between Praxis and the Morgan Conservatory of Paper making. Sign up for Julie McLaughlin’s BIG ASS Paper making class at the Morgan on June 9 & 10 and receive a discount to BOTH classes. Beginners and non, Morgan Students are welcome to enroll in this exciting course, individual sheets of Big ASS Paper (8’ x 10’) are available for purchase. Learn to manipulate these gorgeous sheets of lightweight KOZO paper and dye them using MX Reactive dyes. Techniques can be applied to all types and sizes of paper dyeing. See how the fibers of paper compare to the fibers of fabric in this special collaborative course.
  • Instructor: Trey Gehring Saturday, March 30, 9:30 – 4pm
    Ikat is a yarn dyeing technique that employs tight wrapping of warp or weft bundles in specific areas to resist dye. This class will focus almost exclusively on warp ikat dyeing.  Participants will design and execute their own multi-color ikat warp. Considerations for using the warp including warping techniques will also be discussed.
    Previous warp winding experience is recommended but not required. Please also note that proper ikat binding requires moderate strain on the hands.

In this workshop you will explore the many ways of using MX Reactive dye processes on cotton. Learn freestyle direct painting with dye as well as mono printing. Custom designed fabric yardage can then be used for a wide variety of projects or wearables. The possibilities are endless!

In weeks 3 and 4 create complex layers with shibori as well as color removal processes. Custom designed fabric yardage can then be used for a wide variety of projects or wearables.
