Sign up for Julie McLaughlin’s BIG ASS Paper making class at the Morgan on June 9 & 10 and receive a discount to BOTH classes. Beginners and non, Morgan Students are welcome to enroll in this exciting course, individual sheets of Big ASS Paper (8’ x 10’) are available for purchase. Learn to manipulate these gorgeous sheets of lightweight KOZO paper and dye them using MX Reactive dyes. Techniques can be applied to all types and sizes of paper dyeing. See how the fibers of paper compare to the fibers of fabric in this special collaborative course.
  • Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger Tuesdays: April 10, 17 & 24, May 1 6 - 9pm There are so many different ways to apply dye to fabric! In this four week course you will explore the many ways of using MX Reactive dye processes on cotton and silk. In the first two weeks you will learn freestyle direct painting with dye as well as mono printing and screen printing techniques. In weeks 3 and 4 create complex layers with shibori as well as color removal processes. Custom designed fabric yardage can then be used for a wide variety of projects or wearables. The possibilities are endless!
  • Instructor: Jessica Pinsky Saturday/Sunday August 18 & 19th, 9:30-4pm In this course, learn to screen print on fabric! You can find evidence of screen printing dating back to 13th Century Japan, however screen printing because popularized in the United States in the 1960’s and has remained a favorite form of create repeat images on a variety of materials. Using photo emulsion, we will coat and “expose” our own designs onto screens at our neighborhood print shop, Ink House, a satellite of Zygote Press. Students will then bring their exposed screens to Praxis and learn how to mix thickened MX Reactive dye to pass through the screen. This is a different process than screen printing on paper, as screen printing ink sits on top of the paper surface while dye bonds directly with the cloth fibers.
  • Instructor: Dena Gershon Saturday, September 15, 9:30 - 4pm Begin the day by applying color to silk using immersion dyeing techniques with Acid Dyes. Then, begin to selectively remove color using direct application thiox and immersion thiox techniques, creating unique depth in design and pattern on fabric. Finish a beautiful silk scarf and multiple samples using the variety of techniques learned.
  • Instructor: Annmarie Suglio Saturday, October 20, 9:30 – 4pm Weavers, spinners, knitters, crocheters, or anyone else that works with yarn will benefit from this one-day intensive. Participants will learn multiple techniques to create unique, colorful yarns. Techniques include: Hand-painting, gradient dyeing, and immersion dyeing. This course focuses exclusively on using cellulose dyes which can be used on cotton and linen. Students will learn through demonstrations and hands-on experience while creating their very own custom yarn.
  • Instructor: Eleanor Anderson Saturday, February 8, 10am-4pm In this 1 day workshop, students will dye silk scarves and bandanas (materials provided). While our cloth dyes in the vat, we will design and create linoleum blocks using carving tools and then use them to print on our scarves. This class will explore repeat pattern strategies as well as color relationships on fabric.
  • Instructor: Gregory Hatch Saturday, February 22, 10am-4pm Have you always wanted to learn to felt? Now you can! This accessible course will teach you the basics of wet felting while making a unique case for your phone, tablet, laptop or other device. This class is designed with the beginner in mind and requires no prior experience.
  • Instructor: Jasmine Kornel Saturday February 29, 10am-4pm Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Use multiple immersion baths for layered and complex results. Feel free to bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. You will also use plants from Praxis' very own natural dye garden. All materials are included.
