  • Instructor: Greg Hatch Saturday, September 11th 10am-4pm Have you always wanted to learn to felt? Now you can! This accessible course will teach you the basics of wet felting while also exploring the sculptural potential of seamless felted forms. Learn how you can transform wool into functional objects, organic soft sculptures, or even theatrical puppets. This class is designed with the beginner in mind and requires no prior experience.
  • Instructor: Emmy Osicka Saturday, October 23rd 10am-4pm This class is an introduction to flat and dimensional needle felting. Start by cutting out an iconic fall leaf shape from pre felt and learn to layer fibers for coloring affects. The leaves will then be finished off with a wet felting technique. Next, try your hand at using needles to felt a pumpkin! This  shape is achievable for all levels! No experience is required. Start with the basic round form and end the day by creating the details of its face.
  • Instructor: Abby Cipar Saturday, February 10am-4pm

Suitable for all levels of knowledge and expertise, this workshop seeks to cover the very basics of soft sculpture. We will be creating a small, wall-hanging object of immeasurable coziness! During this workshop, you will be utilizing simple materials such as fabric, thread, a needle, and of course, fiber fill! The course will cover craftsmanship skills to ensure the durability and stability of your piece as well as knowledge about color and texture to form eye-catching combinations. Bring your imagination along for the ride because soft sculpture is full ofpossibilities, and it tends to convince us that even our “mistakes” are actually super endearing and bursting with potential.

During the workshop, view Abby's exhibition in the Praxis Gallery! About the artist: Based in Akron, OH and maintaining a studio space at Summit Artspace, Cipar works in a variety of mediums, most recently moving into large-scale soft sculpture and textiles. They are a 2021 graduate of the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron, receiving their BFA with a focus in painting and drawing. Most recently, they exhibited their work in a solo exhibition, QUEER IN NATURE, at Current gallery in Cleveland, OH. They also recently curated the group exhibition, Everything but the Kitchen Sink, at Summit Artspace in Akron, OH. Their work has been a part of the 85th Annual Juried Student Exhibition at Emily Davis Gallery (receiving third place), as well as the 2020 GAR Foundation Student Art Show at Andrew Jackson House. Notable awards include the 2019 President’s Holiday Art Award from The University of Akron and the prestigious 2019 Folk Charitable Foundation Venice Biennale Travel Award from the Myers School of Art.

An introduction to reading patterns will be covered as well as yarn variations, weights and textures. Do you love COLOR? Sign up for ‘Yarn Dyeing’ to bring your own yarn designs to crochet with.
  • Instructor: Jasmine Kornell Saturday, April 30 10am-4pm

So many colors can be found in nature! This workshop will focus on exploring the array of color that can be achieved using historically cultivated natural dyes on a variety of cellulose fabrics. Natural dyes are an amazing way to acknowledge our environment and connect us to the history of making fabric. During this workshop, you will learn how to use natural dyes on protein, or animal fibers. This is a perfect course for someone interested in diving into natural dyes for the first time. Protein fibers are more forgiving than cellulose and make the dyeing process easier. Participants will use wool and silk however these techniques can be applied to any protein fiber. The basics of fabric mordanting and dye extraction will be covered as well as some simple resist techniques (shibori) to enhance color variations. Students will have the opportunity for open experimentation and will leave the class with a variety of samples and studies. No experience is needed and all materials are included. Do you have protein fiber you’d like to try, bring it along!

  • Instructor: Jasmin Kornell Saturday, June 11 10am-4pm So many colors can be found in nature! This workshop will focus on exploring the array of color that can be achieved using historically cultivated natural dyes on a variety of cellulose fabrics. Natural dyes are an amazing way to acknowledge our environment and connect us to the history of making fabric. Cellulose is any fiber that is plant based such as cotton, linen and rayon. This process differs from protein fibers as the colors are more difficult to mordant or fix to the fabric. Participants will try many different mordanting techniques such as alum, copper, aluminum and post mordant baths. You will get the opportunity to use multiple immersion baths for layered and complex results. The basics of extraction and storage of dyes will be covered as well as some simple resist techniques (shibori) to enhance color variations. All levels are welcome! Take our 'Natural Dyeing with Wool' class to complete your introduction to Natural Dyes.
  • Instructor: Deb Berkebile Saturday, June 26 10am-4pm This course is a quilter's dream! Don’t buy packs of factory dyed fabrics for your quilts, learn to dye your own! In this class, you will learn the techniques of how to dye your own fabric with little water and in the least amount of time. Each participant will leave the course with 9 yards of dyed fabric in every color and shade of the rainbow. We can manipulate the fabric to get different markings or have your pieces a solid color. Participants will use MX Reactive dyes, which are versatile and simple to use. Come away with 3 variations of the same color way (light, medium, dark) of your rainbow palette. You will be dying 12 fat quarters at a time; however, we will prepare all 36 fat quarters before we begin. You will learn different ways of preparing the fabric for different varying results such as a solid or more mottled effect. This course is perfect for beginners and anyone interested in using fabric to sew.
