    Open studios is a great way to try out the workshop at Praxis! Do you have a project you’re working on but need space or equipment? Come use ours! Maybe you’ve taken a class but need a little extra time to work.  A drop in fee of $30 includes access to our dye lab, print tables and equipment.  All dyes and chemicals are included, just bring your materials. or buy some of ours! Drop in hours are for artists who have taken a related class in the past or have experience with the equipment. If you are interest in learning how to use our facilities please consider taking a workshop or individual instruction in order to utilize open studio.   • Instructor: Annmarie Suglio Saturday, October 20, 9:30 – 4pm Weavers, spinners, knitters, crocheters, or anyone else that works with yarn will benefit from this one-day intensive. Participants will learn multiple techniques to create unique, colorful yarns. Techniques include: Hand-painting, gradient dyeing, and immersion dyeing. This course focuses exclusively on using cellulose dyes which can be used on cotton and linen. Students will learn through demonstrations and hands-on experience while creating their very own custom yarn.

    Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger Saturday, August 17, 9:30 – 4pm Explore using soy wax as a resist on fabric to create a sophisticated look of multi-dimensional layering in easy to do steps. We will work with fabric paints and/or dyes for our color palette and discuss the layering of colors. We will make or use found objects for stamping into the fabric using the soy wax. Demonstrations of wax removal techniques and all materials are provided.

  • Instructor: Jessica Pinsky Saturday/Sunday August 18 & 19th, 9:30-4pm In this course, learn to screen print on fabric! You can find evidence of screen printing dating back to 13th Century Japan, however screen printing because popularized in the United States in the 1960’s and has remained a favorite form of create repeat images on a variety of materials. Using photo emulsion, we will coat and “expose” our own designs onto screens at our neighborhood print shop, Ink House, a satellite of Zygote Press. Students will then bring their exposed screens to Praxis and learn how to mix thickened MX Reactive dye to pass through the screen. This is a different process than screen printing on paper, as screen printing ink sits on top of the paper surface while dye bonds directly with the cloth fibers.
  • Instructor: Eleanor Anderson Thursdays, Sept. 12, 19, 26 & Oct. 3, 6:00-9:00pm In this course, students will learn how to warp their own looms and learn various weave structures for rugs such as rag rug, rya knot and tapestry. Students will sample these techniques before moving on to a larger piece towards the end of the class. Prior weaving experience is recommended but not required. Beginner students should plan to take advantage of all open studio sessions during the class, included in the class price. Open studio sessions on Wednesday and Sunday from 12-4 are available to all participants.

  • Instructor: Trey Gehring Thursdays, June 6, 13, 20, and 27 6 - 9pm Students will learn to read draft patterns while experimenting with overshot on eight shaft looms. Some weaving experience is required and students should have knowledge of warp/weft calculation and loom set up before taking this course. Open studio sessions (Wednesday and Sunday from 12-4pm) are included during the 4 week course and it is recommended that students are available for those extra hours to complete an advanced project.

In this class, you will learn to felt wool onto lightweight silks to create one of a kind, soft and beautiful cloths to be turned into scarves or any type of garment of your dreams. This is a technique developed from Australia that has only been around for twenty years.  You will also learn immersion dyeing techniques onto your merino wool to get your favorite colors. No prior experience needed!
  • Instructor: Jasmine Kornel Saturday February 29, 10am-4pm Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Use multiple immersion baths for layered and complex results. Feel free to bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. You will also use plants from Praxis' very own natural dye garden. All materials are included.

Bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Incorporate rust prints, eco printing and indigo dyeing for layered and complex results. You will also contribute to the creation of our very own natural dye garden at Praxis Fiber Workshop.
