Or do you already have a loom at home but have no idea where to start? In Intro to Weaving you will learn how to weave on floor looms from yarn to cloth. By weaving a color and weave sampler scarf using simple woven structures, you will become comfortable with all of the steps in the weaving process all while creating a beautiful scarf to show off to all of your friends. This class is designed with the beginner in mind and requires no prior experience. It is also a great course for anyone that has learned to weave in the past, but needs a refresher.

  • Instructor: Isaac Heyman Saturday June 15 , 9:30-4pm Put aside your knitting needles and learn to use the knitting machine! Knitting machines are devices used to create knitted fabrics in a semi automated fashion. At Praxis, we have knitting machines ranging from standard to bulky gauge to accommodate every type of yarn. These straight machines operate by moving a handle side to side to create panels of knitted fabric. Learn to choose material, cast on and knit swatches using all 3 gauges of knitting machines in this introductory course.

    Instructor: Eleanor Anderson Saturday, September 7th, 9:30-4:00pm In this 1 day workshop, students will dye silk scarves and bandanas (materials provided). While our cloth dyes in the vat, we will design and create linoleum blocks using carving tools and then use them to print on our scarves. This class will explore repeat pattern strategies as well as color relationships on fabric.

    Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger Saturday, August 17, 9:30 – 4pm Explore using soy wax as a resist on fabric to create a sophisticated look of multi-dimensional layering in easy to do steps. We will work with fabric paints and/or dyes for our color palette and discuss the layering of colors. We will make or use found objects for stamping into the fabric using the soy wax. Demonstrations of wax removal techniques and all materials are provided.
  •   Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger Saturday, July 20, 9:30 - 4pm Discover the ancient practice of Shibori using natural and synthetic indigo. Shibori is a Japanese technique to bind, tie and stitch fabric to create different resisted marks and patterns. Learn the basics of indigo dying and combine multiple techniques to create unique cloth. The natural indigo is grown in our very own dye garden here in Cleveland. All materials included, beginners welcome.

    Open studios is a great way to try out the workshop at Praxis! Do you have a project you’re working on but need assistance? Do you have need of small equipment such as spinning wheels or drum carders? Come use ours! Maybe you’ve taken a class but need a little extra time to work. One of our qualified staff members will be here to help! A drop in fee of $30 includes access to our dye lab, print tables and small equipment (floor looms are an additional fee of $10 per week). All dyes and chemicals are included, just bring your material or buy some of ours! We have white pearl cotton yarn and fabrics (quilters cotton, silk sateen and silk organza) available by the yard.   • Instructor: Jen Omaitz Saturday, October 12th 9:30-4:00pm Learn the magical art of marbling on fabric with this one day intensive workshop. We will explore pattern and design through marbling on silk scarfs. We will also explore color and marbling techniques through both traditional (Ebru) and non traditional approaches. Marbling consist of suspending inks on on thickened water (carrageenan). Inks are put though a series of swirls, rakes and other techniques to transform a given design. The outcome then becomes printed, similar to monoprinting, on a surface of choice.
  • Instructor: Cathryn Amidei Saturday/Sunday October 20 & 21th, 9:30-4pm In this course, learn an introduction to the TC2 jacquard loom! The TC2 is a handloom that digitally controls every thread in the warp independently. This workshop will present methods using photoshop to create patterns, imagery and color in the woven matrix on a handloom.  As a special event to kick start the opening of our Digital Leaving Lab, Praxis invites instructor Cathryn Amidei to teach this course on a Tc2 shipped to Cleveland from North Carolina. Cathryn has been studying and weaving Jacquard for 15+ years. She has travelled extensively, studying and teaching on the TC2. She spent a year living in Norway working and walking at Tronrud Engineering Headquarters: the Digital Weaving Norway production facility. She owns a TC2 and provides technical support to Artists and Universities in North America when they purchase the loom and after.
  • Instructor: Trey Gehring Thursdays, June 6, 13, 20, and 27 6 - 9pm Students will learn to read draft patterns while experimenting with overshot on eight shaft looms. Some weaving experience is required and students should have knowledge of warp/weft calculation and loom set up before taking this course. Open studio sessions (Wednesday and Sunday from 12-4pm) are included during the 4 week course and it is recommended that students are available for those extra hours to complete an advanced project.

  • Instructor: Annmarie Suglio Tuesdays: March 13, 20, & 27, April 3 Spinning yarn is one of the oldest fiber traditions whose basic techniques have not changed much since the Leonardo Davinci invented the modern spinning wheel around 1490. A meditative and relaxing process, spinning is great way for weavers, knitters and artists alike to create custom yarn. Participants will choose their fiber, dye it, and learn to spin one and two ply yarns in this exciting four week course.

  • Instructor: Rebecca Cross Tuesdays: October 16, 23 & 30, November 6 Learn how to forge for natural dye materials in local metro parks and community gardens. Bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Incorporate rust prints, eco printing and indigo dyeing for layered and complex results. You will also contribute to the creation of our very own natural dye garden at Praxis Fiber Workshop.
