• Instructor: Jessica Pinsky Saturday/Sunday August 18 & 19th, 9:30-4pm In this course, learn to screen print on fabric! You can find evidence of screen printing dating back to 13th Century Japan, however screen printing because popularized in the United States in the 1960’s and has remained a favorite form of create repeat images on a variety of materials. Using photo emulsion, we will coat and “expose” our own designs onto screens at our neighborhood print shop, Ink House, a satellite of Zygote Press. Students will then bring their exposed screens to Praxis and learn how to mix thickened MX Reactive dye to pass through the screen. This is a different process than screen printing on paper, as screen printing ink sits on top of the paper surface while dye bonds directly with the cloth fibers.

Shibori is a Japanese technique to bind, tie and stitch fabric to create different resisted marks and patterns. Learn the basics of pole wrapping, folding, strutting and tying on cotton and silk in this exciting one day workshop. Combine multiple techniques to create unique cloth in a variety of colors using immersion dye processes. All materials included, beginners welcome.
  • Instructor: Jennifer Omaitz Saturday, September 29, 9:30 – 4pm Learn the magical art of marbling on fabric with this one day intensive workshop. We will explore pattern and design through marbling on silk scarfs. We will also explore color and marbling techniques through both traditional (Ebru) and non traditional approaches. Marbling consist of suspending inks on on thickened water (carrageenan). Inks are put though a series of swirls, rakes and other techniques to transform a given design. The outcome then becomes printed, similar to monoprinting, on a surface of choice.

In this workshop you will explore the many ways of using MX Reactive dye processes on cotton. Learn freestyle direct painting with dye as well as mono printing. Custom designed fabric yardage can then be used for a wide variety of projects or wearables. The possibilities are endless!

In this four week course you will explore the many ways of using MX Reactive dye processes on cotton and silk. In the first two weeks you will learn freestyle direct painting with dye as well as mono printing and screen printing techniques. In weeks 3 and 4 create complex layers with shibori as well as color removal processes. Custom designed fabric yardage can then be used for a wide variety of projects or wearables. The possibilities are endless!
  • Instructor: Jo Ettorre Tuesdays February 13, 20, & 27, March 6 6 - 9pm Find out what your most beloved yarns might do by blending them on the knitting machine.  Knit them quickly into blanks to be dyed or many other uses for knit fabrics.
  • Instructor: Annmarie Suglio Tuesdays: March 13, 20, & 27, April 3 Spinning yarn is one of the oldest fiber traditions whose basic techniques have not changed much since the Leonardo Davinci invented the modern spinning wheel around 1490. A meditative and relaxing process, spinning is great way for weavers, knitters and artists alike to create custom yarn. Participants will choose their fiber, dye it, and learn to spin one and two ply yarns in this exciting four week course.
  • Instructor: Annmarie Suglio Saturday, October 20, 9:30 – 4pm Weavers, spinners, knitters, crocheters, or anyone else that works with yarn will benefit from this one-day intensive. Participants will learn multiple techniques to create unique, colorful yarns. Techniques include: Hand-painting, gradient dyeing, and immersion dyeing. This course focuses exclusively on using cellulose dyes which can be used on cotton and linen. Students will learn through demonstrations and hands-on experience while creating their very own custom yarn.

    Open studios is a great way to try out the workshop at Praxis! Do you have a project you’re working on but need assistance? Do you have need of small equipment such as spinning wheels or drum carders? Come use ours! Maybe you’ve taken a class but need a little extra time to work. One of our qualified staff members will be here to help! A drop in fee of $30 includes access to our dye lab, print tables and small equipment (floor looms are an additional fee of $10 per week). All dyes and chemicals are included, just bring your material or buy some of ours! We have white pearl cotton yarn and fabrics (quilters cotton, silk sateen and silk organza) available by the yard.
