• Instructor: Trey Gehring Thursdays, June 6, 13, 20, and 27 6 - 9pm Students will learn to read draft patterns while experimenting with overshot on eight shaft looms. Some weaving experience is required and students should have knowledge of warp/weft calculation and loom set up before taking this course. Open studio sessions (Wednesday and Sunday from 12-4pm) are included during the 4 week course and it is recommended that students are available for those extra hours to complete an advanced project.

  • Instructor: Dena Gershon Saturday, April 13, 9:30 - 4pm What happens when you combine the most lush materials of merino wool and silk together? In this class, you will learn to felt wool onto lightweight silks to create one of a kind, soft and beautiful cloths to be turned into scarves or any type of garment of your dreams. This is a technique developed from Australia that has only been around for twenty years.  You will also learn immersion dyeing techniques onto your merino wool to get your favorite colors. No prior experience needed!

    Instructor: Trey Gehring Thursdays: February 21 & 28, March 7 & 14 6 - 9pm Interested in learning how to create your own cloth? Or do you already have a loom at home but have no idea where to start? In Intro to Weaving you will learn how to weave on floor looms from yarn to cloth. By weaving a color and weave sampler scarf using simple woven structures, you will become comfortable with all of the steps in the weaving process all while creating a beautiful scarf to show off to all of your friends. This class is designed with the beginner in mind and requires no prior experience. It is also a great course for anyone that has learned to weave in the past, but needs a refresher.
  • Instructor: Cathryn Amidei Saturday/Sunday October 20 & 21th, 9:30-4pm In this course, learn an introduction to the TC2 jacquard loom! The TC2 is a handloom that digitally controls every thread in the warp independently. This workshop will present methods using photoshop to create patterns, imagery and color in the woven matrix on a handloom.  As a special event to kick start the opening of our Digital Leaving Lab, Praxis invites instructor Cathryn Amidei to teach this course on a Tc2 shipped to Cleveland from North Carolina. Cathryn has been studying and weaving Jacquard for 15+ years. She has travelled extensively, studying and teaching on the TC2. She spent a year living in Norway working and walking at Tronrud Engineering Headquarters: the Digital Weaving Norway production facility. She owns a TC2 and provides technical support to Artists and Universities in North America when they purchase the loom and after.
  • Instructor: Annmarie Suglio Saturday, October 20, 9:30 – 4pm Weavers, spinners, knitters, crocheters, or anyone else that works with yarn will benefit from this one-day intensive. Participants will learn multiple techniques to create unique, colorful yarns. Techniques include: Hand-painting, gradient dyeing, and immersion dyeing. This course focuses exclusively on using cellulose dyes which can be used on cotton and linen. Students will learn through demonstrations and hands-on experience while creating their very own custom yarn.
  • Instructor: Dena Gershon Saturday, September 15, 9:30 - 4pm Begin the day by applying color to silk using immersion dyeing techniques with Acid Dyes. Then, begin to selectively remove color using direct application thiox and immersion thiox techniques, creating unique depth in design and pattern on fabric. Finish a beautiful silk scarf and multiple samples using the variety of techniques learned.
  • Instructor: Jessica Pinsky Saturday/Sunday August 18 & 19th, 9:30-4pm In this course, learn to screen print on fabric! You can find evidence of screen printing dating back to 13th Century Japan, however screen printing because popularized in the United States in the 1960’s and has remained a favorite form of create repeat images on a variety of materials. Using photo emulsion, we will coat and “expose” our own designs onto screens at our neighborhood print shop, Ink House, a satellite of Zygote Press. Students will then bring their exposed screens to Praxis and learn how to mix thickened MX Reactive dye to pass through the screen. This is a different process than screen printing on paper, as screen printing ink sits on top of the paper surface while dye bonds directly with the cloth fibers.
  • Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger Tuesdays: April 10, 17 & 24, May 1 6 - 9pm There are so many different ways to apply dye to fabric! In this four week course you will explore the many ways of using MX Reactive dye processes on cotton and silk. In the first two weeks you will learn freestyle direct painting with dye as well as mono printing and screen printing techniques. In weeks 3 and 4 create complex layers with shibori as well as color removal processes. Custom designed fabric yardage can then be used for a wide variety of projects or wearables. The possibilities are endless!

  • Instructor: Trey Gehring Saturday, March 30, 9:30 – 4pm
    Ikat is a yarn dyeing technique that employs tight wrapping of warp or weft bundles in specific areas to resist dye. This class will focus almost exclusively on warp ikat dyeing.  Participants will design and execute their own multi-color ikat warp. Considerations for using the warp including warping techniques will also be discussed.
    Previous warp winding experience is recommended but not required. Please also note that proper ikat binding requires moderate strain on the hands.
