• Instructor: Sarah McMahon Mondays, Feb 24, March 2, 9 & 16, 6:00-9:00pm Interested in learning how to create your own cloth? Or do you already have a loom at home but have no idea where to start? In Intro to Weaving you will learn how to weave on floor looms from yarn to cloth. By weaving a color and weave sampler scarf using simple woven structures, you will become comfortable with all of the steps in the weaving process all while creating a beautiful scarf to show off to all of your friends. This class is designed with the beginner in mind and requires no prior experience. It is also a great course for anyone that has learned to weave in the past, but needs a refresher.
  • Instructor: Rebecca Cross Tuesdays: October 16, 23 & 30, November 6 Learn how to forge for natural dye materials in local metro parks and community gardens. Bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Incorporate rust prints, eco printing and indigo dyeing for layered and complex results. You will also contribute to the creation of our very own natural dye garden at Praxis Fiber Workshop.
  • Instructor: Jasmine Kornel Saturday February 29, 10am-4pm Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Use multiple immersion baths for layered and complex results. Feel free to bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. You will also use plants from Praxis' very own natural dye garden. All materials are included.
  • Instructor: Dena Gershon Saturday, April 13, 9:30 - 4pm What happens when you combine the most lush materials of merino wool and silk together? In this class, you will learn to felt wool onto lightweight silks to create one of a kind, soft and beautiful cloths to be turned into scarves or any type of garment of your dreams. This is a technique developed from Australia that has only been around for twenty years.  You will also learn immersion dyeing techniques onto your merino wool to get your favorite colors. No prior experience needed!
  • Instructor: June Covington Saturday, June 22, 9:30 – 4pm Weaving is not confined to formal looms, you can learn to make a beautiful woven objet d'art on a forked tree branch, a household object, or almost anything. Instructions will include material selection, methods, and hands-on techniques. Off-loom weaving can transform everyday objects into the foundation for expressive textile techniques. This beginning weaving workshop is limited to 8 participants.
  • We offer open studio time Wednesdays and Sundays from noon to 4:00pm. $30 drop in.

    Open studios is a great way to try out the workshop at Praxis! Do you have a project you’re working on but need space or equipment? Come use ours! Maybe you’ve taken a class but need a little extra time to work.  A drop in fee of $30 includes access to our dye lab, print tables and equipment.  All dyes and chemicals are included, just bring your materials. or buy some of ours! Drop in hours are for artists who have taken a related class in the past or have experience with the equipment. If you are interest in learning how to use our facilities please consider taking a workshop or individual instruction in order to utilize open studio.   • Instructor: Trey Gehring Thursdays, June 6, 13, 20, and 27 6 - 9pm Students will learn to read draft patterns while experimenting with overshot on eight shaft looms. Some weaving experience is required and students should have knowledge of warp/weft calculation and loom set up before taking this course. Open studio sessions (Wednesday and Sunday from 12-4pm) are included during the 4 week course and it is recommended that students are available for those extra hours to complete an advanced project.
