• Instructor: Kathryn Simmons Wednesdays: February 26, March 4, 11, & 18 Spinning yarn is one of the oldest fiber traditions whose basic techniques have not changed much since the Leonardo Davinci invented the modern spinning wheel around 1490. A meditative and relaxing process, spinning is great way for weavers, knitters and artists alike to create custom yarn. Participants will learn to spin and ply yarns in this exciting four week course.

  • Instructor: Eleanor Anderson Saturday, October 26th, 9:30-4:00pm In this 1 day workshop, students will learn the basic stitches of embroidery such as couching and french knots, among many others.  Students will create a sampler and spend time practicing the techniques on cotton fabric during the workshop. This workshop is perfect for beginners and a great technique to do at home!
  • Instructor: Rebecca Cross Tuesdays: October 16, 23 & 30, November 6 Learn how to forge for natural dye materials in local metro parks and community gardens. Bring dye stuff from your own garden to experiment with on various types of fiber. Learn the chemistry basics of natural dyes and mordants and how colors change depending on the mordant you choose. Incorporate rust prints, eco printing and indigo dyeing for layered and complex results. You will also contribute to the creation of our very own natural dye garden at Praxis Fiber Workshop.
  • Instructor: Eleanor Anderson Thursdays, Sept. 12, 19, 26 & Oct. 3, 6:00-9:00pm In this course, students will learn how to warp their own looms and learn various weave structures for rugs such as rag rug, rya knot and tapestry. Students will sample these techniques before moving on to a larger piece towards the end of the class. Prior weaving experience is recommended but not required. Beginner students should plan to take advantage of all open studio sessions during the class, included in the class price. Open studio sessions on Wednesday and Sunday from 12-4 are available to all participants.
  • Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger Saturday, September 21st, 9:30-4:00pm Discover the ancient practice of Shibori using natural and synthetic indigo. Shibori is a Japanese technique to bind, tie and stitch fabric to create different resisted marks and patterns. Learn the basics of indigo dying and combine multiple techniques to create unique cloth. The natural indigo is grown in our very own dye garden here in Cleveland. Then, enhance your indigo designs by incorporating multi layers of color removal using discharge paste and discharge immersion vats.
  • Instructor: June Covington Saturday, June 22, 9:30 – 4pm Weaving is not confined to formal looms, you can learn to make a beautiful woven objet d'art on a forked tree branch, a household object, or almost anything. Instructions will include material selection, methods, and hands-on techniques. Off-loom weaving can transform everyday objects into the foundation for expressive textile techniques. This beginning weaving workshop is limited to 8 participants.
  • Instructor: Dena Gershon Saturday, April 13, 9:30 - 4pm What happens when you combine the most lush materials of merino wool and silk together? In this class, you will learn to felt wool onto lightweight silks to create one of a kind, soft and beautiful cloths to be turned into scarves or any type of garment of your dreams. This is a technique developed from Australia that has only been around for twenty years.  You will also learn immersion dyeing techniques onto your merino wool to get your favorite colors. No prior experience needed!

  • Instructor: Sarah McMahon Mondays, Feb 24, March 2, 9 & 16, 6:00-9:00pm Interested in learning how to create your own cloth? Or do you already have a loom at home but have no idea where to start? In Intro to Weaving you will learn how to weave on floor looms from yarn to cloth. By weaving a color and weave sampler scarf using simple woven structures, you will become comfortable with all of the steps in the weaving process all while creating a beautiful scarf to show off to all of your friends. This class is designed with the beginner in mind and requires no prior experience. It is also a great course for anyone that has learned to weave in the past, but needs a refresher.
  • Instructor: Isaac Heyman Saturday, April 18th, 10am-4:00pm Put aside your knitting needles and learn to use the knitting machine! Knitting machines are devices used to create knitted fabrics in a semi automated fashion. At Praxis, we have knitting machines ranging from standard to bulky gauge to accommodate every type of yarn. These straight machines operate by moving a handle side to side to create panels of knitted fabric. Learn to choose material, cast on and knit swatches using all 3 gauges of knitting machines in this introductory course.
